Schedule:
- Monday-Friday, Full-time
Hours:
- 30-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
Pay:
- $28 per hour
In this role, you will:
Position Overview:
We seek a qualified Lead Staff member to work alongside the Probation Department Supervisor. This key role involves overseeing StudentNest staff, ensuring they effectively perform their duties, and maintaining a secure environment for staff and students. The ideal candidate will have a background in probation, security, or a related field, (i.e. school student services or counseling intervention), and possess strong leadership and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Staff Oversight: Monitor the performance of StudentNest staff to ensure they are providing high-quality academic assistance and adhering to safety protocols.
Safety and Security: Ensure a safe and secure environment for all staff and students. Conduct regular checks and assessments to identify and address any potential risks or safety concerns.
Training and Development: Provide ongoing training and support to StudentNest staff, including best practices for working with students who are detained in a juvenile facility.
Communication: Serve as a liaison between the StudentNest team and the Probation Department, facilitating clear communication and collaboration to address any issues or concerns.
Reporting: Maintain accurate records of staff performance and incident reports, providing feedback to StudentNest Management and Probation as needed.
Crisis Management: Respond effectively to any emergencies or incidents involving staff or students, ensuring appropriate action is taken to mitigate risks.
Essential Functions
Academic Support & Tutoring:
- Provide individualized or small group tutoring for detained juveniles, helping them complete assigned coursework, prepare for standardized testing (e.g., GED), and improve academic performance in subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, and science.
- Assess the educational needs of each juvenile and develop tailored lesson plans and activities to support their academic growth.
- Provide instruction and guidance on study strategies, time management, and effective learning techniques.
Collaboration & Coordination:
- Work closely with educational staff, including teachers and counselors, to track students' academic progress and create personalized educational plans.
- Communicate regularly with probation officers and other juvenile detention staff to ensure that each juvenile’s educational needs are being met.
- Assist in preparing progress reports on juveniles’ academic performance, behavioral issues, and other factors affecting their education.
Mentorship & Positive Reinforcement:
- Serve as a positive role model, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and personal development.
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to help juveniles stay motivated and engaged in their academic work.
- Promote good behavior and academic integrity through positive reinforcement strategies.
Recordkeeping & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including lesson plans, attendance, and progress reports.
- Document any significant behavioral or academic issues and report them to appropriate staff.
- Ensure compliance with all educational standards, policies, and regulations.
Program Development & Enhancement:
- Assist in developing and implementing educational programs and activities that address the specific needs of detained youth, including special education services where applicable.
- Participate in regular staff meetings to contribute ideas for improving educational services within the juvenile detention facility.
Crisis Management & Safety:
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures while providing tutoring services, ensuring a safe learning environment.
- Be prepared to manage challenging behaviors and de-escalate conflicts as needed, working collaboratively with detention staff.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or a related field is preferred.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the essential duties may be considered.
Experience:
- The ideal candidate will have a background in probation, security, or a related field
- Prior experience working with at-risk youth, in juvenile detention, or in an educational setting is preferred.
- Experience tutoring or teaching, particularly in a structured or correctional environment, is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of educational practices, teaching techniques, and adolescent development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse youth populations.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries while working with detained juveniles.
- Patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude when working with challenging youth behaviors.
- Ability to manage group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and provide crisis intervention when necessary.
Certifications:
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
- Any additional training or certifications related to juvenile education, behavioral management, or rehabilitation is a plus.
Working Conditions
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit for extended periods and may require walking, standing, and occasional lifting of materials or supplies.
Environment:
- Work is performed in a secure juvenile detention facility where individuals’ charges can range from minor to serious offenses. There may be occasional exposure to challenging or disruptive behaviors.

Exposure to Conflict and Violence:
- You may be exposed to an environment where aggression and violence between residents are present. Tensions can run high, particularly if individuals are struggling. You may witness verbal or physical altercations.
Surveillance and Supervision:
- The presence of probation officers, staff, and security personnel is maintained at all times. Surveillance cameras may be used throughout the facility.
Schedule:
- Flexible hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, depending on the needs of the facility and the juveniles being served.
